Uit cijfers die het Kadaster maandag publiceerde blijkt dat het aantal oversluitingen het afgelopen kwartaal meer dan verdubbeld is ten opzichte van een jaar eerder. Door het afsluiten van een nieuwe hypotheek kunnen huizenbezitters hun rentelasten terugdringen. Hoewel er doorgaans een boete staat op het openbreken van een bestaande hypotheek, is oversluiten toch voor veel mensen een lucratieve optie. Het boetegeld immers verdienen ze terug uit de lagere maandlasten. In het derde kwartaal van dit jaar werden er ruim 36.000 hypotheken overgesloten. In dezelfde periode van 2002 bedroeg dat aantal nog 17.179. In vergelijking met het tweede kwartaal van dit jaar steeg het aantal oversluitingen met ruim 9 procent. Het kabinetsvoornemen om de hypotheekrenteaftrek te beperken tot waar deze eigenlijk voor bedoeld is - bevordering van het eigen woningbezit - heeft geleid tot een scherpe stellingname van het onlangs opgerichte Platform Woningmarkt. Een artikel van De Haas en Van Kalles in deze krant van 5 november 2003 doet daarvan uitgebreid verslag. De opvattingen van het Platform maken duidelijk dat zelfs een marginale ingreep in de hypotheekrenteaftrek de belanghebbende sector ertoe brengt alles uit de kast te halen om te bepleiten dat voorlopig alles bij het oude moet blijven.
